드라마와 관련하여 주인공인 원경은 원경왕후 민 씨의 시호에서 가져온 것입니다. 같은 여말선초 배경의 드라마인 용의 눈물, 정도전, 육룡이 나르샤, 태종 이방원 등과 비교되는 부분이 많은데,가장 큰 차이점은 원경의 경우, 고려 말에 해당하는 주요 사건들을 전부 생략한 채, 2차 왕자의 난까지 지난 후 곧, 방원이형 종정에게 왕위를 물려받고 즉위한 시점에서 1화가 시작된다는 점입니다. tvN에선 표현 수위 문제로 TV에서 방영하기 어려운 부분이 있어서 편집된 채로 15세 이용가로 송출이 되고 TVING을 통해서 편집된 내용을 포함한 청소년 이용불가 버전을 공개하여 방영한다고 합니다.
